The Psalms in Lent
Join us for a Women’s Silent Retreat directed by Fr. Jim Sullivan.
Fr. Jim Sullivan is a priest for the Diocese of Oakland, in the San Francisco Bay Area. After serving as an associate in several East Bay parishes, Fr. Sullivan was assigned to the chaplaincy at Bishop O'Dowd High School, in Oakland, in 2015. This is his tenth year at the high school. "It is truly missionary territory," Fr. Sullivan says, of his work among the teens. "It's my greatest assignment yet." Fr. Sullivan is the author of several books including the trilogy on the Rosary and Scripture. He resides at St. Clement Parish in Hayward.
Many of the psalms express Lenten themes such as sacrifice, self-denial, repentance, fasting, prayer, and alms-giving. Many of the psalms also reflect on the Jewish experience in the desert, resonating with Lenten themes of taking time away from our busy everyday lives to just be with the Lord. Finally, there are numerous predictions of the Passion of Christ in the psalms. We will take a deep dive into the riches of this book of Scripture over the course of the weekend, relating the psalms to our own Lenten journey, and deepening our preparation for the joys of Easter.
This retreat will take place in an atmosphere of silence to allow everyone the freedom to have a personal heart to heart dialogue with the Lord and experience His Love anew. Registration closes one week before the retreat. Check in time is 4-6p on Friday. The retreat concludes at 12p on Sunday.
